Paseo – Seattle's world famous Caribbean sandwich shop – closed its doors yesterday.
Signs outside the Fremont and Ballard locations blamed "unfortunate circumstances."
A workers’ rights lawsuit was filed against Paseo earlier this year.
The news has shocked Paseo fans. Some laid flowers and lit candles outside the doors. They took to Twitter, where Paseo was trending.
They've also been calling into KUOW.
Sally called in to say she'd seen the news online that a sandwich shop in Fremont had closed.
“I thought, ‘Fremont sandwich place closed, couldn’t care less,’ and then I saw it was Paseo, and I posted to Facebook, 'NOOOOO' with, like, 900 Os.”
Valerie from Magnolia called to say that her husband had never been to Paseo. They were about to go on Monday, but the drive seemed a little long.
“When we found out on Tuesday that he’d never have an opportunity to try the food that I’d tried and loved, we were really so disappointed. Couldn’t believe the timing,” she said.
But others, although sad the nondescript sandwich had closed its Fremont and Ballard locations, felt that if the owners had been stiffing employees, well, maybe it should close.
Stanley Stavish wrote in to say: "If their demise is due to worker discrimination or wage theft, it’s better that they do not receive my money and that they do not do business in our community any longer."
Meanwhile, Patty in Ballard just misses her sandwich: “I swear that is the best sandwich I have ever, ever had. Their chicken sandwich with cilantro and onions and, oh! I’m sad.”
