We hear all the time about the social-political divide in the United States, mostly from the comfort of our respective bubbles. When UC Berkeley-based sociology professor Arlie Russel Hochschild realized the extent to which she didn’t understand the experience of right-leaning Americans, she decided to do something about it. She choose to embed herself in Lake Charles, Louisiana, for an ethnographic experiment.
The result of her five-year-long series of excursions is her book “Strangers in Their Own Land: Anger and Mourning on the American Right.” Hochschild spoke about her experiences and takeaways with University of Washington political science professor Christopher Sebastian Parker. Their conversation took place on February 12, 2018, at Seattle University’s Pigott Auditorium as part of Town Hall Seattle’s Civics series. KUOW’s Sonya Harris recorded their discussion.
