Shuri readies for a fight in new Marvel film Black Panther.

"Black Panther," the latest cinematic rendition of the Marvel superhero universe, opens nationwide tomorrow.

To call it highly anticipated is an understatement – this opening will blow all previous Marvel film openings out of the water.

Marcie Sillman sat down with the authors of two pieces about the movie: Maya Smith, professor in French and Italian studies at the University of Washington, and Oakland-based writer and podcast host Carvell Wallace.

The film, they said, is a celebration and focal point of black joy. It glories in afro-futurism and unabashed black excellence, allowing a diaspora to dream of what could be.
