As Congress moves forward with immigration reform, we take a look at how this issue connects to culture, business and families in the Northwest. Our region is home to a unique blend of immigrants who work in all parts of our economy — from high-tech to agriculture. This population already has a deeply-rooted history here. And its ranks are expanding rapidly.Proposals for comprehensive immigration reform address border security, employment verification, guest-worker programs and pathway to citizenship for an estimated 11 million unauthorized immigrants in the US.

Why Washington Jails Aren't Detaining Undocumented Immigrants

Marcie Sillman talks with Jorge Baron, executive director of the Northwest Immigrant Rights Project, about why Washington counties are not detaining immigrants per the request of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

ICE responded to KUOW interview requests saying they are are not giving interviews at this time. They did, however, provide a prepared statement.

Currently all counties in Washington state are limiting cooperation with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) detainers. When law enforcement agencies remand criminals to ICE custody rather than releasing them into the community, it helps contribute to public safety and the safety of law enforcement. ICE remains committed to working with its law enforcement partners to make our communities safer by promoting public safety; national and border security; and the integrity of the immigration system.
