An Eye For An Eye: Did It Make The World Blind?

Thane Rosenbaum's book, "Payback."

Steve Scher talks with Thane Rosenbaum, author of "Payback: The Case For Revenge," about how we view the phrase "an eye for an eye" and the role of revenge in our current justice system.

Rosenbaum said the phrase is a standard for equitable retribution. "There's no justice unless victim feels revenged, and there is no revenge if it's not proportionate," he said. "Anytime that we recoil at a punishment because it's excessive or disproportionate or unmeasured, it's not moral revenge. It's disproportionate, and it leads to the recycling of more revenge."
