KUOW’s RadioActive Youth Media program has been selected as a participant in the 2014 Raikes Foundation Youth Program Quality Initiative. A partnership between School’s Out Washington and the Raikes Foundation, the Youth Program Quality Initiative (YPQI) focuses on organizations providing out-of-school time youth programs in King, Pierce and Spokane counties.

“We’re thrilled to join the cohort of amazing youth organizations that work with YPQI!” said KUOW producer Jenny Asarnow, who co-manages RadioActive with producer Lila Kitaeff. “Participating in YPQI will help us foster an even stronger community of youth media makers at RadioActive. The kind of challenging, creative work youth do in our workshops is only possible in a safe and supportive environment where everyone can be their full self. That’s the kind of environment Raikes supports, and participating in YPQI will strengthen RadioActive for years to come.”

The Raikes Foundation, whose mission is to empower young people to transform their lives, has invested in strengthening the quality of after school programs in Washington State since 2009 and helped launch the YPQI.

RadioActive is a great program that teaches young people how to tell their own stories through radio journalism,” said Jody Rosentswieg, program officer at the Raikes Foundation. “We are delighted that KUOW has embraced the YPQI as a way to build the skills and expertise of program staff to ensure RadioActive continually meets the quality bar that leads to positive youth outcomes.”

Since 2004, RadioActive has served nearly 1000 students via their mobile workshops, and the beginner’s workshops where participants age 16-18 gain access to public radio knowledge, skills and institutions. RadioActive youth producers have received several awards including the 2013 Regional Edward R. Murrow Award for best feature and best hard news stories. Graduates of the program have gone on to work in commercial TV, and at KUOW. To learn more about Radioactive visit
