Seattle Historian: JFK Rose 'Above Our Cynicism'

Crosscut Photo

Local historian Knute Berger was just a kid when President John F. Kennedy was assassinated. Berger's parents were Republicans -- they hadn't voted for Kennedy. But for Berger, Kennedy was a kind of hero.

"I thought he was really cool," Berger said. "I was envious of John John."

To Berger, Kennedy seemed like an ideal father -- handsome, tall, a football player.

“Kennedy embodied a way of embracing and building on the optimistic and rising above our cynicism," Berger said. "And in that way, I’m still inspired by that.”
