A Seattle open-water swimmer is questioning whether Diana Nyad really swam to Florida on her own.Last week, 64-year-old Nyad became the first person to swim from Cuba to Florida without a shark cage. But Seattle swimmer Andrew Malinak looked at the GPS data on Nyad’s official website and, to him, her speeds did not look right.
Malinak is a geotechnical engineer in Seattle, and he’s one of many long-distance, open-water swimmers who are skeptical that Nyad really swam from Cuba to Florida last week without the aid of a boat.
Nyad says her speed picked up sharply because she got into a swift Gulf Stream current. Nyad’s spokesperson says the swimmer will meet with her skeptics Tuesday.
