Welcome KUOW's Spring 2015 RadioActive Youth Producers

KUOW Photos/RadioActive Staff

KUOW's RadioActive Youth Media is proud to offer our spring journalism workshop. Six teens, aged 16-18, will spend 12 weeks learning what it means to be a journalist.

During that time, they'll gain the skills to create radio stories. They'll do all of the research, interviews, writing, voicing and editing to produce their own feature stories on topics of their choice.

Krubel Amare, Sophomore, Garfield High School

I’m a young Ethiopian high school student who likes to get creative when I get the chance. I like to have new experiences and am open to trying new things in the world because it’s ours. I’m also a great supporter of the hip hop culture and Zulu nation. Let the good times roll!

DioMari Charles, Sophomore, Garfield High School

I am a very outspoken person. I like to laugh and I love music. I am 17 years old and attend Garfield High School. I sometimes struggle in school but everything always ends up good.

As a teenager it’s hard for me to see other teenagers struggle; not only money-wise, but how most are struggling in many ways that you wouldn’t think would be an issue for most people. I believe my job as a teen is to show support to teens I’m around and always let them know it’s not about your body, the way you dress or how you present yourself to the world. It’s about who you are as a person and what you get, not receive, because it’s a world full of people and there are too many people for you to please. Stay humble and always treat others how you would love to be treated.

I’ve always been a cynic first and foremost. People have described my mindset as being that of a 65-year-old man. I’ve always been frustrated by the lack of information about important issues. I like to be in a position where I can help to inform people.

I've always loved hearing stories on the radio. I think being able to create my own stories and share them with others will be exhilarating, which is why I decided to be a part of RadioActive. I'm looking forward to continuing to study broadcast journalism at American University this fall, after I graduate from Inglemoor High School. Be sure to keep your eyes peeled to the news on TV and your ears tuned into the radio, because someday soon you'll be seeing me or hearing my voice everywhere.

I like sleeping. But when I’m not sleeping, you’ll find me obsessively reading, debating or driving with NPR – not music – on in my car. I’m a reporter for my school newspaper. That and my extensive involvement in debate have led me to KUOW, a combination of speaking and telling stories. Apart from that, I’m often out and about doing community service, trying to get acquainted with everyone I run into.
