Seven Stories From Seattle's New Holly Neighborhood

Last summer the StoryCorps booth set up in Seattle’s New Holly neighborhood. More than 250 people came by to record their conversations.

In this program, we feature seven of those conversations:

  • Mayor Ed Murray and his husband Michael Shiosaki discuss how their relationship paralleled advances in rights for same sex couples;
  • Gerald Hankerson describes life in solitary confinement;
  • Mary Lou Balassone talks with daughter Kayla Balassone about her adoption;
  • Jesse Hagopian and his mother Amy Hagopian describe how their family history influenced their social activism;
  • Long time activist ‘Uncle’ Bob Santos reminisces about growing up in Seattle’s International District in the 1940s;
  • Dorothy Bullitt and Mary Merryweather describe the "Cinderella" dress;
  • Nimo Suedo talks about how a day of berry picking shaped his consciousness of race, class, and community.
