Finalists named for Seattle Schools Superintendent

The Seattle School Board has announced the three finalists in the running to be the next Superintendent: Denise Juneau; Andre Spencer and Jeanice Swift.

Juneau previously served two terms as Montana's Superintendent of Public Instruction. She was also the first American Indian ever elected to an executive statewide office. And, in 2016, she lost a campaign for Montana's only seat in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Juneau was defeated by Ryan Zinke who later became President Donald Trump's Secretary of the Interior.

Spencer has been the superintendent of Harrison School District Two in Colorado Springs for more than five years. He's also an Army veteran and former principal and science teacher.

Swift is the superintendent of Ann Arbor Public Schools in Michigan. She was named the 2018 Michigan Superintendent of the Year by the Michigan Association of School Administrators. She's also a former teacher and principal.

The Seattle school district is scheduled to hold a public forum with all three finalists on Thursday night.

According to the district's website, it will be held on Thursday, March 29 from 5:00-8:15 p.m. at the John Stanford Center Auditorium. It will also be broadcast live on the District’s Channel 26.

The current Seattle superintendent, Larry Nyland, is expected to leave the job in June when his contract expires.

Year started with KUOW: 1998.
